London, Paris and New York city skyline prints.
The rule I apply most when taking city landscape photographs is the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds means dividing the image into three horizontally and into three vertically. This may mean two thirds of the image will be sky and the bottom third will be the subject of the photograph. The panoramic print below is a perfect example. Two thirds sky and a third is taken up with the London skyline. You can see this print here.
This rule also works vertically. You can see in the print of Paris below that the Eiffel tower takes up roughly the left hand third of the image and the cityscape takes up the remaining vertical third. This print below features a few times on my website pages as well as the blog and you can see the print here. I’ve also printed it in black and white, you can see it in the Paris black and white prints gallery here.
Sometimes I use the rule of thirds horizontally as well as vertically. In the Paris prints below I ‘ve divided the trees into roughly a third each side and also horizontally. The subject in the middle helps balance out the vertical and the horizontal. In the print of 42nd street in New York on the right you can also see a split of thirds vertically and also horizontally. It’s a good rule to follow.
You can see these two prints above in the galleries. You’ll see I use the rule of thirds a lot. The Paris prints is here and the New York prints is here. Give us a call if you have any questions Mon-Sat 9am-6pm.
