Prints of London. Limited edition prints and prices.

There are three reasons why limited edition prints are expensive.

Reason1. The first reason is they are limited. The print you buy from me is one of 150. Once I get to 150 I stop and the print then becomes collectable. People notice this stuff. It’s described as ‘fine art photography’. Your clients notice this when they see the prints hanging in your office and it’s an even bigger deal when you give one as a present. I think it’s really important as the internet is awash with framed prints that aren’t fine art.

Reason 2. A great deal of time and effort goes into producing a limited edition print. I often spend hours either waiting for the light to be perfect or I’m looking for movement or the perfect light streak. In most of my blogs I talk about how I produce a print and the film I use. Photographers who produce work like mine have years of expertise to draw on. I only know of a few worldwide. I also only shoot on film which only students and a very few photographers like me use. The resulting limited edition prints are considered fine art prints and they are collectable. They are more expensive.

All my prints come in a hand made black frame. You can’t choose from five different colours using clever web software on my website. My prints are special because the whole piece is bespoke.

Reason 3. Limited edition prints are normally higher quality and they are hand made by the artist or photographer. This type of photography is fine art photography and worthy of limited edition status. Most of what I see online is nice but anyone could take what I see with a half decent camera. Certainly I doubt most of what you see on the internet was taken on film and printed by hand. An artistic take on a familiar view is fine art. A high production postcard looking print of a city skyline is not fine art. Price aside there is a huge difference between a limited edition fine art framed print and one that isn’t.
